ART-0025 André Miripolsky — "On the Edge" Original Mixed-Media Assemblage on Panel, Signed & Dated 1990, Pop Art
A rare and powerful original assemblage painting by André Miripolsky (American, born Paris 1951) — one of the defining figures of West Coast Pop Art and a celebrated Absolut Vodka artist of the 1990s. Titled On the Edge, this large-format work dates to March 1990, predating Miripolsky's Absolut commissions and representing an earlier, rawer phase of his practice.
The composition is built from painted, layered, and assembled scraped cardboard — corrugated textures, torn edges, and abstracted figurative elements combined into a sculptural panel that pushes the boundary between painting and three-dimensional object. The urban energy and abstract expressionist influences at work here connect Miripolsky to the tradition of Robert Rauschenberg's combines and Basquiat's early found-surface work — raw materials elevated by artistic vision into something wholly original.
Miripolsky's career is one of the great stories of American Pop Art: born in Paris, raised across Iran, Thailand, Austria, Indonesia, and Korea, he sold his first painting at age 10 to the American Ambassador in Indonesia. He went on to design Elton John's iconic "Piano Jacket" for the 1980 Central Park concert, create the celebrated Fear No Art series, paint the sets of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (1997–2004), and receive commissions from Bette Midler, Quincy Jones, Robin Williams, The Rolling Stones, MTV, and Mattel. In 1991, Absolut Vodka commissioned him — the same campaign built by Michel Roux — and a landmark Absolut Miripolsky billboard stood in San Francisco for two years.
On the Edge is signed, titled, and dated March 1990 on the verso — a fully documented early work from a major Pop Art name, estate fresh to market.
