Atlas Melody, 1994
Limited Edition Metal Sculpture | Edition 5 of 20
Signed, editioned, and dated to side edge: BRAD HOWE 5 of 20 1994
16 in. × 15 in. × 5 in.
A boldly conceived and richly colored abstract metal sculpture by Brad Howe — one of California's most internationally recognized sculptors and a leading figure in contemporary American public art. Atlas Melody is a limited edition maquette after Howe's original monumental work exhibited at Fundidora Park in Monterrey, Mexico, signed directly on the side edge with edition number (5 of 20) and date (1994). The abstract composition of interlocking metal shapes and vivid colors evokes the spirit of the Memphis Group, Alexander Calder, and the great tradition of postwar abstract sculpture — a lineage Howe consciously inhabits and extends.
Brad Howe was born in 1959 in Riverside, California. A student of International Relations at Stanford University, he discovered his passion for art at the University of São Paulo, where he fell in with architecture students and began making Calder-inspired kinetic mobiles from scrap metal. Since then, he has exhibited in over eighteen countries worldwide and his works have been placed in collections in more than 32 countries, including public commissions for MIT, Temple University, the City of Beverly Hills, and the Georgia International Convention Center. His work is held in the Pasadena Museum of California Art, M.I.T., and numerous private and corporate collections worldwide.
Howe's sculptures balance what one writer called "playfulness, wit, strength, stillness, and motion" — a dynamic energy that makes them immediately engaging in any interior setting. The small scale of this edition makes it ideal for a desk, shelf, or pedestal, bringing the presence of monumental public sculpture into a domestic or commercial space.
