Frank Stella (American, 1936–2024) was among the most important and consequential American artists of the 20th century. His legendary Black Paintings series (1958–1960) — large canvases of black enamel with thin pinstripe gaps following the shape of the canvas — represented a radical break from Abstract Expressionism and became a founding document of American Minimalism. Stella's declaration "What you see is what you see" became one of the defining statements of postwar art.

The 1967 Black Series lithographs translate the formal language of those celebrated paintings into print — geometric, austere, and visually commanding.
