FUR-019 Harvey Probber (Attributed) — Terrazzo & Walnut Surfboard Coffee Table, Asymmetric Brutalist Walnut Block Base, MCM, c.1960s
A rare and monumental surfboard-form terrazzo and walnut coffee table attributed to Harvey Probber (American, 1922–2003) — one of the most iconic and sought-after forms in his celebrated MCM catalogue, and a centerpiece-caliber statement piece for any serious mid-century interior.
The thick terrazzo top — surfboard-shaped, with embedded contrast materials — is supported by two sculptural brutalist walnut blocks of deliberately differing sizes, a characteristic Probber design gesture that introduces asymmetry and visual tension into an otherwise minimal composition. The pairing of raw terrazzo with warm walnut is quintessentially Probber: luxurious natural materials in an honest, architectural relationship.
Harvey Probber founded his Fall River, Massachusetts studio in the 1940s and became one of the defining figures of American mid-century modern furniture. He is credited with inventing the modern sectional seating concept, collaborated with architects Philip Johnson and Eero Saarinen, and counted Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Henry Ford II among his clients. His terrazzo surfboard tables are among his most recognized and reproduced designs — actively listed on 1stDibs, Chairish, and by specialist MCM dealers at $1,500–$3,500+.
This example is unmarked — consistent with many Probber pieces — and is attributed by the auctioneer to Probber based on design and construction. It presents a genuine restoration opportunity: the sculptural form and exceptional scale (over 66" long) make it a compelling project piece whose post-restoration value would significantly exceed its current price.
