The volcanic glaze — a technique producing richly textured, crater-pocked, lava-flow surfaces of extraordinary tactile and visual complexity — was among the defining decorative languages of postwar modernist ceramics. From the celebrated Fat Lava workshops of West Germany (Scheurich, Jopeko, Bay Keramik, Carstens) to the Florentine studio of Marcello Fantoni, the French ateliers of Vallauris, and American and Scandinavian studio potters, volcanic and lava glaze effects were embraced as the ceramic equivalent of Abstract Expressionism — organic, forceful, and evocative of geological time and primal energy.
