Paul Evans Style — "Cityscape" Brass & Glass Wall Shelf, 9" × 47" × 12", c.1970s
A striking brass and glass wall shelf in the manner of Paul Evans's iconic Cityscape series — one of the most celebrated and widely referenced designs in American studio furniture history.
Paul Evans (1931–1987) developed his Cityscape line for Directional Furniture in the late 1960s and early 1970s, drawing on the geometric skylines of Manhattan to create furniture with a distinctly urban, architectural sensibility. Constructed from faceted chrome and brass-plated steel panels with inset glass, Cityscape pieces became defining objects of the American Design Renaissance — now held in major museum collections including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Smithsonian.
This wall shelf captures the essence of the Cityscape aesthetic: the characteristic stepped, irregular roofline silhouette, warm brass-toned metalwork, and a glass surface that balances solidity with lightness. "Paul Evans Style" or "in the manner of" pieces from this period were produced in significant numbers as the design influenced a generation of commercial furniture makers — they share the visual language of the original while being accessible entry points to the look.
A versatile display and storage piece with strong visual impact. The long horizontal format (nearly 4 feet wide) makes it ideal for entryways, living rooms, or home offices. The brass and glass combination reads equally well in modern, transitional, and fully MCM interiors.
