ART-012 Purvis Young — Original Mixed Media on Paper, Abstract Figures, 35" × 23", Signed
An original and expressive mixed media work on paper by Purvis Young (American, 1943–2010) — one of the most celebrated and collected self-taught artists in American art history. Featuring Young's signature abstract figures in yellow and green. Signed at bottom "Young."
Purvis Young was a towering figure of American Outsider and Folk Art, born in Liberty City, Miami, Florida. Self-taught and fiercely prolific, Young spent decades painting the streets, struggles, and spiritual life of Miami's Overtown neighborhood — covering walls, fences, and found materials with his signature imagery of angels, horses, warriors, and urban figures. His work is held in over 60 major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. His collectors have included Jane Fonda, Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi, and Damon Wayans. His auction record reached $102,000 in 2024.
