FUR-84 Richard Hersberger for Pace Collection — Chrome Lounge Chair & Ottoman, c.1970
A handsome and collectible lounge chair and matching ottoman designed by Richard Hersberger (American, b.1931) for Pace Collection, New York, circa 1970 — one of the definitive expressions of American luxury modernism and among the most sought-after lounge chair designs of the decade.
Pace Collection was the premier American purveyor of high-end modernist furniture during the 1960s and 1970s, commissioning designs from both American designers and leading Italian manufacturers including Saporiti and Mariani. Richard Hersberger's chrome lounge chair — with its cantilevered chrome-plated iron frame and generous upholstered seat and back — became one of the studio's signature pieces: the heavy chrome frame providing structural drama while the deeply comfortable upholstery made it equally suited to actual use. The design was produced in a range of upholstery options; examples in leather command the strongest market. The Pace Collection lounge chair and ottoman is a fixture of serious MCM interiors and continues to appreciate.
