Wassily Kandinsky — Centre Georges Pompidou Exhibition Poster, 1981
Paris, France | Original Lithograph | Framed | Printed in France

An original exhibition poster from the landmark 1981 Kandinsky retrospective at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris — one of the most significant presentations of the artist's work ever assembled. The exhibition was a joint production between three of the world's greatest Kandinsky collections: the Centre Pompidou, the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, bringing together approximately one hundred finished paintings spanning his entire career. Still in its vintage frame and printed in France for the original exhibition, this is a genuine artifact of the Parisian art world at its peak.

The Centre Pompidou — opened in 1977 and named for French President Georges Pompidou — holds one of the three largest Kandinsky collections in the world, including landmark works such as Yellow-Red-Blue (1925), Composition IX (1936), and Sky Blue (1940). Much of the collection arrived via the bequest of Kandinsky's widow Nina, who donated 15 paintings and 15 watercolors to the museum in 1976. The 1981 retrospective drew on all of this material, making the poster a commemorative piece for a truly once-in-a-generation exhibition.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) is recognized as one of the founders of abstract art. Trained in law before turning to painting in his thirties, he developed a revolutionary visual language rooted in his belief that color and form could convey spiritual and emotional experience independent of representation. He co-founded the Blaue Reiter movement, taught at the Bauhaus, and his treatise Concerning the Spiritual in Art (1911) remains one of the most influential texts in modern art history.
