LOT-012 Wolfgang Hoffmann Style — Art Deco Tubular Chrome Settee & Lounge Chair Frames, c.1930s — Estate of Douglas W. Lucak

A matched pair of Art Deco tubular chrome frames — settee and lounge chair — in the manner of Wolfgang Hoffmann, produced in the same Chrome-and-steel modernist idiom that defined American Art Deco seating of the 1930s.

Wolfgang Hoffmann (1900–1969) was the son of the legendary Viennese designer Josef Hoffmann and brought his father's Wiener Werkstätte sensibility into dialogue with American modernism. After emigrating to the United States, Wolfgang Hoffmann designed tubular chrome furniture for Howell Company of Geneva, Illinois — one of the foremost American producers of tubular steel furniture — creating some of the most refined and collectible American Deco seating of the era. His work shares the vocabulary of contemporaries KEM Weber and Gilbert Rohde, and Hoffmann pieces appear regularly at Wright, Rago, and specialist Deco auctions.

These frames are catalogued as "Hoffmann Style" with no maker's mark present — produced in his idiom by a quality commercial manufacturer of the period. The settee and lounge chair together form a naturally paired seating group. Both frames lack cushions and show chrome oxidation and arm scuffs consistent with age.
