Florence Knoll (born Florence Schust, 1917–) is one of the towering figures of American modernism — architect, furniture designer, interior designer, and the creative force behind Knoll's transformation from a small furniture company into the defining force in American office and residential design. Trained by Eliel Saarinen at Cranbrook, and by Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, and Marcel Breuer, Florence brought the full rigor of European Modernism to American design. The Philadelphia Museum of Art mounted a major retrospective, "Florence Knoll: Defining Modern," in 2004.
