An iconic and highly collectible mid-century modern lamp — the celebrated "Wishbone" design by Gerald Thurston, one of America's most significant and sought-after lighting designers of the postwar era. In beautifully turned solid walnut and gleaming brass, this is a lamp that collectors recognize on sight.

The Wishbone's genius is in its simplicity and elegance: a sculptural, elegantly turned walnut body rises from a squared brass base, culminating in the lamp's signature feature — an elegant split-fork "wishbone" motif at the neck where the lamp divides to support the shade. The design is architecturally precise and warmly organic at the same time, combining the cool geometry of brass with the natural warmth of walnut in a way that epitomizes American MCM design at its best. At 36.5 inches tall, this is a proper statement lamp.

About Gerald Thurston:

Gerald Thurston was the leading designer at Lightolier during the postwar building and design boom — and also produced celebrated designs for Laurel Lamp Co. — creating clever, elegant lighting that suited American lifestyles of the 1950s and 1960s. His designs were at the forefront of the mid-century modern lighting revolution. During his decades-long tenure, he became internationally known, and rumor has it the manufacturer insured his right hand for one million dollars — such was his value to the company. His fixtures are characterized by clean lines, vibrant colors, and an appealing marriage of metals and rich woods.

The Wishbone lamp is among his most iconic and recognized designs — actively listed by specialist MCM galleries on 1stDibs and regularly appearing at auction. It is one of the lamps that defines the canon of American MCM lighting.
