FUR-101 Guglielmo Ulrich — Sculpted Armchair, New Upholstery, Italian Modern, c.1940s–50s
An elegant sculpted armchair by Guglielmo Ulrich — one of the foremost names in Italian Modernist furniture design and a significant figure in the tradition of 20th-century Italian decorative arts.
Guglielmo Ulrich (1904–1977) was a Milan-based architect and designer whose work bridged the refined craftsmanship of Italian cabinetmaking with the clean, modernist sensibilities of the mid-century. Trained at the Politecnico di Milano, Ulrich became known for furniture of exceptional sculptural quality — pieces that prioritized form, material integrity, and the expressive potential of solid wood. He exhibited at the Milan Triennale and was closely associated with the Rationalist and Italian Modern movements of the 1940s and 1950s. His work is represented in major Italian collections and appears regularly at Sotheby's, Christie's, and specialist Italian design auctions.
This armchair exemplifies Ulrich's sculptural approach: the frame is shaped with an assured, flowing hand, with carved arms that taper and curve with quiet authority. The chair has been re-upholstered in new fabric, presenting cleanly and ready for placement. Some light scratches to the wood frame are consistent with age and prior use.
