A striking and highly distinctive pair of mid-century modern side tables attributed to Harvey Probber by Public Sale Auction House, Hudson, NY — featuring dramatically shaped guitar pick / triangular terrazzo tops with embedded contrast materials on elegantly sculpted three-legged walnut frames. No maker's marks present — offered as attributed to Probber based on the auction house's expertise. One of the most visually original pairs of side tables in the collection.

Harvey Probber (1922–2003) was one of the most inventive and forward-thinking American furniture designers of the postwar era. Best known for essentially inventing the modular sectional sofa in the 1940s, Probber also produced a remarkable body of case furniture and occasional tables characterized by his bold use of materials, organic sculptural forms, and refusal to follow conventional furniture design formulas. His work is increasingly collected and his pieces appear regularly on 1stDibs, at Wright Auction, and at specialist MCM dealers at strong prices.

Terrazzo — the composite surface material of marble chips, glass, quartz, and cement — was the prestige material of mid-century American modernism, used in hotel lobbies, corporate headquarters, and civic buildings. Its appearance on furniture rather than floors signals serious design ambition. The thick terrazzo tops with embedded contrast materials give these tables a richness and visual complexity that wood or glass surfaces simply cannot achieve.

The guitar pick / triangular form is the defining design gesture — an organic, biomorphic silhouette that places these tables directly in the tradition of 1950s American design at its most inventive. The three-legged walnut bases provide a perfect structural counterpoint to the organic top forms.
