FUR-017 Massimo Iosa Ghini — "Numero Uno" Lounge Chair for Moroso, Dynamic Collection, Italian Postmodern / Memphis, c.1986
A rare and iconic "Numero Uno" lounge chair by Massimo Iosa Ghini (Italian, born Bologna 1959), produced by Moroso, Italy — one of the most collectible pieces from the celebrated Dynamic Collection of the late 1980s and a landmark object of Italian Postmodern design.
Massimo Iosa Ghini is one of the defining figures of Italian design's most electric era. A graduate of the Politecnico di Milano, he co-founded the Bolidismo movement and collaborated with Ettore Sottsass' Memphis group — the radical design collective that shook the design world in the 1980s with its bold rejection of functionalist orthodoxy in favor of sculptural, expressive, and emotionally charged objects. Iosa Ghini's work for Moroso represents the Dynamic Collection's vision at its most refined: streamlined, aerodynamic forms that evoke speed, energy, and a kind of optimistic futurism.
The Numero Uno features a chrome tubular steel frame, black-stained ash armrests and backrest, and upholstered seating — a composition that is simultaneously architectural and sensual. It is documented in major design literature including Design italiano 1950–2000 by Giuliana Gramigna, and comparable examples are currently listed on Pamono and 1stDibs in the $2,300–$3,400 range.
Moroso, founded in Udine in 1952, is one of Italy's last family-owned luxury furniture companies and has collaborated with the world's most significant designers. Moroso pieces have been exhibited at MoMA New York, Le Palais de Tokyo, the Grand Palais Paris, the Victoria & Albert Museum London, and the Venice Biennale.
