A rare postmodern sculpture by Curtis Jeré, signed and dated "C. Jeré 1988" on the base.
Most collectors know Jeré for brass and copper wall sculpture of the 1960s and '70s. This piece shows the studio in a very different mode. A folded steel ribbon in deep blue zigzags up from a square base, passing through three intersecting rings in red, plum and yellow, with a yellow sphere and a blue sphere set on the orbits like planets. The bold color, sharp angles and playful geometry come straight from the Memphis movement of the 1980s. Painted Jeré pieces in this style are seldom seen on the market.
It works on a console, a sideboard or a pedestal, and it reads from every side, so it can also stand in the middle of a room.
