FUR-008 Warren Platner for Knoll — Original Armchair, Original Mohair Upholstery, Restoration Project
A rare and important original Warren Platner Armchair for Knoll — one of the most visually distinctive and collectible furniture designs of the 20th century, in its original mohair upholstery. Offered as a restoration project, with the wire frame showing heavy oxidation and pitting consistent with age. For the right buyer — a collector, restorer, or design enthusiast — this represents an exceptional acquisition opportunity.
Warren Platner (1919–2006) was an architect and designer who trained and worked in the office of Eero Saarinen alongside some of the most important names in American architecture. His 1966 Platner Collection for Knoll stands as one of the most original and technically demanding furniture designs ever produced: each chair is constructed from hundreds of individual curved steel wire rods, welded by hand into a basket-like structural form that simultaneously serves as frame, base, and visual statement. Platner described his goal as furniture that was "decorative, gentle, and graceful" — and the collection is exactly that, as recognizable today as when it was introduced nearly 60 years ago.
The original mohair upholstery is a significant provenance detail. Knoll offered mohair as a premium upholstery option on the Platner Collection, and original mohair examples are considerably more desirable to serious collectors than later reupholstered pieces. Even in its current condition, the presence of the original fabric is a reason to restore rather than replace.
